EMF – Precision Custom and High Volume Coatings
EMF, pioneer in optical coating solutions since 1936 was the first company in the United States to offer evaporated metal thin film coatings. Today, with its 26 vacuum coating chambers EMF offers 40 million sq. in. of coating capacity for high volume applications in automotive, displays, instrumentation, satellite communications, protective face shields, power cell components, glass, lighting and entertainment. And, its chambers are capable of large format optics up to 108" for land and space-based astronomy,
EMF – HEAR on IRG26 Datasheet
High Efficiency Anti-Reflection (HEAR) coatings are used in infrared optics to maximize the light transmitted through the optic. Uncoated infrared materials typically experience a 20% - 30% loss on the initial surface due to reflections. An HEAR coating can reduce that loss to less than 0.5%.

EMF – DLC on Germanium Datasheet
Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) coatings are used in specialized defense and scientific applications to protect optical elements from environmental
damage. For maximum performance, a DLC coating is applied to the side of the optic exposed to the external environment. A High Efficiency Anti-Reflection (HEAR) coating is applied to the opposite side to maximize light transmission.EMF – DLC on IRG26 Datasheet

EMF – Infrared Windows
Infrared windows are used in specialized military and defense and scientific applications to protect the sensor or camera being used to collect information. Different infrared wavelength bands use different materials as their substrate. Infrared windows require an anti-reflective (AR) coating on both surfaces of the window. There are two main types of AR coatings used: High-Efficiency Anti-Reflective (HEAR) and Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC).
EMF – Coating Solutions for Large Format Optics (up to 108″)
With 26 vacuum coating chambers, capability to handle large-scale optics up to 108” (2.75m) and 5,000 lbs (2, 267 kg) and 80+ years of experience, EMF is uniquely capable of handling large format optics and special substrate programs that require intensive engineering interaction and careful program management. Applications for these large scale coatings include telescope mirrors, flight simulator mirrors and astronomical mirrors.
EMF – DLC/HEAR Coating for IR Optics
A DLC coating is the preferred choice for IR optics that have to withstand harsh environmental conditions. It adheres to virtually all lR substrates - Ge, Si, ZnSe, ZnS, CaF2, sapphire, and chalcogenides. It is an Anti-Reflective (AR) coating with high hardness and good stress resilience with minor losses (between 5-10%) in transmission. Our proprietary "coat up" PE-CVD process virtually eliminates typical coating defects - pinholes, stress, uniformity and adhesion. Coatings adhere to MIL-M-13508C and MIL-C-675C standards for adhesion, abrasion, humidity, solubility, salt spray, temperature cycle and sand-slurry wiper.
